Could accessibility open the door for ecological monitoring any time, anywhere, like in a sixth-grade classroom learning data monitoring, or a university course simulating climate projections inside a controlled micro-ecosystem? In this project, we ask ourselves, what opportunities emerge when technologies extend beyond traditional research spaces?

Pocket Microscope

MICROTERRA-ONE is a small-scale climate-simulation terrarium that recreates real environmental conditions, past, present, or future, inside a controlled, miniature ecosystem. It uses sensors and adjustable heating, lighting, and humidity to model climate scenarios and reveal how soil microbes, fungi, and mosses respond to environmental change in real time. With MICROTERRA-ONE, users can recreate the conditions of real ecosystems, whether from local environments to distant biomes. They can model future climate scenarios, track microbial responses and watch soil communities adapt or struggle under projected heatwaves.

We envision MICROTERRA-ONE as an ongoing, evolving project, one that grows alongside technological advances and builds a broad community of people united by curiosity about the natural world. Our aim is for MICROTERRA-ONE to inspire inquiry-driven engagement and make environmental exploration more accessible. We hope future iterations of the prototype will create meaningful impact in unexpected spaces and disciplines we have yet to imagine.
